Madeline Island Candle -Soy Candle Manufacturers USA

The most frequent question that we get in the candle shop is, “How did you start making candles?” We (Glenn and Michael) had never made, or thought about making candles before this adventure, so let’s start with the why.

In 2009 Michael was a weaver and board member at Woods Hall Craft Shop, a Madeline Island institution. Knowing that the Craft Shop needed more repeat traffic, we did some brainstorming about ideas to make a handmade staple that the Craft Shop could keep in stock. For almost 60 years, Woods Hall has provided arts and craft education for the island community. The Craft Shop maintains studio space for island artisans as well as a shop in which to sell unique and wonderful creations (we don’t have verification quite yet, but Woods Hall Craft Shop might be the oldest institution of its type in the State of Wisconsin). And importantly, Woods Hall Craft Shop builds community, as it brings people together to share in education and access to economic opportunity. So we decided to make candles.

Now the "how": How hard could it be to make candles?

We started doing research online, put together the outline of a business plan, and started to experiment in our kitchen. We dreamed up a small assortment of original color and fragrance combinations, and in 2011 put the first batch of candles in the Woods Hall Craft Shop to see what would happen. We made small batches of candles, melting wax in a small 6 quart reconfigured Presto Pot. People seemed to like the idea and began to buy Madeline Island Candles, and before we knew what had happened candle pouring had taken over our kitchen and dining room. So to maintain domestic tranquility, we moved the candle factory to town and opened a small storefront/candle factory in La Pointe in 2012. By 2014, we had outgrown our small space, and bought the beautiful Russell House & Gardens directly across from the ferry landing. In 2018, more than 18,000 shoppers visited our shop, production studio, and surrounding gardens. The line of candles we make continues to expand as we create new ideas, and now we provide part-time employment to two wonderful island residents.

There have been bumps and starts along the way, but we are proud to offer quality, environmentally friendly candles, made by islanders, for you to enjoy!

To all of you, from all of us on Madeline Island - Thank you for visiting!
