    Congratulations, Bayfield!

Our neighboring town on the mainland, Bayfield, has been named as one of USA Today's Top 10 Best Coastal Small Towns:

"Gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, charmingBayfield features hilly streets lined with Victorian-era homes and quaint bed and breakfasts. This coastal town on the shores of Lake Superior is particularly charming come autumn, when the foliage is at peak color and the apple harvest is in full swing."

    We agree!
  • Our Pick for Best Sunset: The Inn & The Pub

The Pub at The Inn on Madeline Island features gorgeous views of Lake Superior. Without a doubt, this coastal restaurant and inn is our pick for Lake Superior Magazine's Best of the Lake Awards, in the category "Best Place to Watch a Sunrise/Sunset".

    the-inn-on-madeline-island

Whether you've booked a room in the The Inn on Madeline Island or enjoying cocktails on the beachfront patio, walking along the docks or swimming laps in the lake-side pool, the view of Lake Superior is everywhere you turn. Situated on the southwest tip of the island, close to Grant's Point beaches and the ferry landing, the beautiful lighthouse-themed building is in the perfect location for viewing the sun set over the water.

A memorable setting for weddings, the Inn hosts many weddings each season, with ceremonies on the lawn overlooking the water and wedding parties in the Great Room in the Lightkeeper's Lodge. The spacious accommodations also work well for large group outings and family events.

The Pub and The Inn are delightful at any time at day, with delicious fare and a relaxing atmosphere; but sunset is when the Madeline Island "magic" happens. The sky's bright colors reflect across the lake waters, encouraging scenic strolls along the docks and a beautiful dining experience in the Pub.

Here are just a few sunset views from The Inn's backyard: we encourage previous guests to tag their own sunset photos on Facebook Twitter with the hashtag #bestofthelakebestsunset to encourage votes for this gorgeous Lake Superior destination!

  • Our Pick for Best Breakfast: Farmhouse

We’re excited to spread the word and get the vote out for Best of the Lake 2016. We’re so proud of our community and local businesses, here on the island and across the water on the mainland. It’s a growing, thriving, creative and amiable community, with so many “bests” it’s hard to decide on favorites for the ballot!

1458772035For Best Breakfast, however, a local favorite immediately springs to mind: the wonderful, warm, inviting, and absolutely delicious Farmhouse restaurant.

Though relatively new, Farmhouse has already established itself amongst locals as a sustainable, farm-to-table, good food eatery and community gathering place.

One of Kickstarter’s success stories, Farmhouse was launched by food industry veterans Lauren Schuppe and Gilpin Matthews with pledges of over 146 financial backers, eager to see their vision come to light. Their goal was both health and community focused: to contribute to the local food system of Madeline Island by providing local breakfast and lunch, growing produce for a true farm-to-table approach, and eventually providing fresh produce and fish in the winter months when food and resources are more scarce.

Lauren and Gilpin's long term goal vision for Farmhouse is especially appealing: “A community center for food sharing and education will be born. Farmhouse will be a gathering place to share recipes, farming techniques and yes, last night's shenanigans.”

It’s begun! Lauren and Gilpin’s passion for creating a balanced, sustainable food system for a healthy community shows through every lovingly prepared meal and morsel. Their recipes find ways to creatively incorporate seasonal ingredients sourced from community farmers, creating a simply delicious, wholesome menu and wonderful dining experience.

If you haven’t stopped in Farmhouse restaurant, be sure to on your next visit to Madeline Island! And if you have, then we know you’ll want to vote for them as “Best Breakfast” in the Best of the Lake Awards. And don't forget "Best Shopping Experience" here at Madeline Island Candles! Candle Making in 3 Degree Weather

    Dear Friends,

Despite our "Snow Day" Candle of the Month (see below), it's been a less freezing and snow-filled winter than those in the past, and the ice road has not arrived.  The ferry is continuing to carry chilly passengers to our fair island, bringing mainland visitors to our doorstep - a treat this time of year! If you make the voyage, come visit our cozy & merry candle shop, where we are mixing soy wax and pouring beeswax in preparation of warmer days.
