    Happy Holidays!

    Christmas in the Candle Shop

    Dear Friends,

Christmas is in the air! The weather on Madeline Island has turned chilly, and the candle shop is bustling with warmly wrapped holiday shoppers, filling their arms with wonderfully scented candles, ornaments, specialty soaps, and handcrafted items.

Our arms are filled, too - with packages and parcels of all shapes and sizes, wrapping and stamping and sending our candles out across North America. (Orders taken by Friday, December 18 will still be shipped for Christmas Delivery!)

Island life is busy, each day accented by a holiday tradition, a tree lighting, a Christmas event. Islanders are looking forward to the Community Christmas Pageant and Program at St. John's this Saturday, December 19th (630PM), and of course to Christmas itself, for merry festivities with family and friends.

Every night when we close up shop, we turn on the Christmas lights, surrounding the Candle Shop with color and light. If only there were snow on the ground - we're dreaming of a White Christmas!

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season, and a joyful, peaceful New Year!

  • Why Beeswax?

New Beeswax Taper Candles from Madeline Island Candles

Madeline Island Candles has always used Soy Wax for our hand-poured candles. You may have read about the advantages of using soy wax – from slow burning time and better air quality to sustainability and supporting domestic farming (read more here).

Now, we are excited to introduce a new collection of handpoured Beeswax candles, all available as beautiful 10 inch taper candles. So you may be wondering – Why Beeswax?

    beeswax-tapers-pack-of-six-sand_1Beeswax Facts:

Unlike Paraffin Wax candles, Beeswax Candles burn cleanly, and because they are all natural, do not release additives or toxins into the air.

Beeswax Candles are hypo-allergenic. They can effectively reduce allergies, asthma, and hay fever by releasing negative ions, cleansing the air of dust, odors, and toxins.

Beeswax is a renewable resource, made by the worker bee for honeycomb.

Beeswax candles burn very brightly and yet slowly, lasting a longer time than paraffin candles.

Each candle is naturally scented by the honey and nectar of flowers packed into the honeycombs – so the sweet scent varies depending on the hive.

We carry both naturally colored Beeswax Candles and candles dyed with colors inspired by the colors of Madeline Island. Shop our new collection of deliciously honey-sweet, long-lasting beeswax taper candles >

  • Green Light on Madeline Island

We were so pleased to meet with Adam and Jennifer from KBJR/NBC recently, and show them around the candle making studio. This news segment and accompanying article are part of the news station's "Green Life" Lifestyle series, and focuses on our natural candlemaking practices, local ingredients, and green choices. It also touches on our relationship with Woods Hall Studio and Gallery, who have fostered an educational arts community on the island for over 60 years. You can read more about Woods Hall Craft Shop here.

  • October on the Island

leafOur busy summer season in the candle shop has come and gone. And while we are still welcoming guests, our focus is turning to fall and winter.

Halloween is just around the corner, and we are getting ready to welcome the little ghosts and goblins that will find their way, through the dark and spooky night, to the candle shop for a treat (no tricks please).

But don't think we aren't busy. In the shop, we are beginning to wrap and ship packages, large and small - as our guests visit our website and buy gifts for their friends and family. In the garden, it's time to clean up, trim back and get ready for winter.

It's also the time of year when we begin to plan for new fragrances for the next year (if you have any ideas - send them our way!). We begin to plan for changes we'd like to make to the shop, and dream up additions to the garden for next season (look for a new garden water feature when you come by in the spring!).

But the big questions for the candle shop and local community revolve around details like - When will the ferry boat stop running? Will we have an ice road this year, and if so, for how long? Will there be ice caves at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore this year? When will the first snowfall arrive?

We hope you're enjoying this beautiful autumn!
