Visitors-Guide-1Planning your trip to Madeline Island? Of course you are! Before we know it the busy summer season will be upon us, and Madeline Island is such a lovely vacation destination.

The 2015 Visitor's Guide to Madeline Island features beautiful photography and plenty of information about the island's campgrounds & parks, galleries and shops (that's us!), golf, restaurants, bars, and island events.

We're so lucky to be here year round, to enjoy the quiet winters of the island, and the local community. But there is an exciting, tremulous energy that arrives with the summer ferry, filled to the brim with curious visitors and happy children. We're excited to see you, too!

    Preparing for an Island Summer

Construction, Clean Up & Candle Making!

Pussy WillowSpring has brought pussy willows to brighten up the candle shop, while we hustle and bustle about, preparing for the busy summer ahead.

While some are cleaning the shop, and setting up new displays of beautifully crafted accessories and artisan goods, others are carefully making candle after candle, in a wide variety of scents. We've also been finalizing the packaging design for our newest candle passion, Beeswax Tapers.

    Beeswax Candles

    Votive Candles

Along with our usual favorite scents, we are testing some new fragrances: peach, coconut, honeysuckle/ jasmine and a blend of patchouli/parsley/orange.

This month we've also had the sights and sounds of construction, as our friends at Northwoods Construction worked hard to complete a new, accessible restroom for our guests.

We love these new polished, recycled aluminum candle holders - so creative!

We're so looking forward to having more visitors on the island: to share all of the new sights, sounds, and most importantly - scents - of Madeline Island Candles.

    Crafting for Community

Why We Love Woods Hall Craft Shop

Woods Hall Madeline IslandWoods Hall Craft Shop has been hosting a unique community-focused crafting project this month: weaving a large-scale rug for the Madeline Island Library. Weavers and non-weavers alike have been asked to join in, weaving a row or two of the 8 foot x 12 1/2 foot rug.

We give 10% of our profits to Woods Hall - and here's why.

Woods Hall Madeline IslandMadeline Island, like many islands in the US, has a seasonal economy, making for frugal, long winters.  In the 1950s, Woods Hall was founded by St. John's Church to address this concern: to keep the islanders busy and build community by weaving rugs and creating crafts in the winter, and helping their economy when those goods sold in the summer.

To this day, Woods Hall provides a venue for many islanders to increase their earnings, and a place for local artisans and craftsman to gather, workshop, and create.

  • Why We Love Woods Hall Craft Shop

    Where It All Began...

Before we opened the doors of our own retail shop, we were making candles for Woods Hall Craft Shop.  This wonderful Madeline Island institution has provided arts and craft education and community building to the island for 60 years, with studio space for island artisans and a retail shop of beautiful craft and artisan goods.

Michael was creating weavings for Woods Hall Craft Shop, but we brainstormed a product that might create some repeat customers - and started experimenting in our kitchen. In 2011 our first batch of Madeline Island Candles were placed on the shelves, and met so much success that eventually we expanded into our own retail location, before moving to our current spot right across from the ferry landing.

    Why Woods Hall Craft Shop?

woods-holeWe give 10% of our profits to Woods Hall - and here's why. The Island, like many islands in the US, has a seasonal economy, making for frugal, long winters.

Michael is a proud member of the board at Woods Hall, and our candles are still available there, amongst the other artisan wares, such as soaps, weavings, jewelry, hand-spun yarn, cards and prints, and apparel. Next time you are on the island, make sure to visit Woods Hall Craft Shop!

  • Apostle Islands Ice Caves to Open this Weekend!

    Apostle_Island_Sea_Cave_in_Winter

apostle-island-ice-caveThe National Park Service has declared that the Apostle Island ice caves will open this Saturday, February 28! If conditions hold, visitors can journey to these breathtaking Apostle Island ice caves off the coastline of Lake Superior. We are holding our breath with excitement - these gorgeous caves are rarely open to visitors, as the weather conditions must be just right. Visitors trek across frozen beaches and a frozen Lake Superior, and strong winds can break up the ice near the opening of the sea caves. The ice must be 10 inches thick and in place for two weeks for the National Park Service to allow visitors (Be sure to check the latest conditions at the National Park Service website on Saturday morning!).

Fingers crossed - because when the winter weather holds and the caves are open, they are a sight that must not be missed. During the summer, these caves are visited by sea kayakers, who can paddle beneath the vaulted chambers and tunnels. But when the water freezes, stunning frozen waterfalls and several-story-high ice spires create a wintery cathedral, with thousands of frozen icicles studding the ceilings of the caves.

If you are making the trek this weekend, add a trip to nearby Madeline Island to your travels. Drive across the Ice Road and be sure to stop in at Madeline Island Candles and share your ice cave story and photos with us!

    Spring is in the Air

Inside the Madeline Island Candles Shop

Yes, it's cold outside (a chilly -17 degrees this morning!) but in the candle shop we are preparing for Spring. Amy is hard at work in the pillar studio; Gloria is focusing on container candles, tealights and travel tins; I'm working on new product ideas and presentation improvements for the shop; and Glenn is - well, Glenn is making sure that we are all on task!
We know that soon, the daffodils will be up in the outside garden, new migratory birds will be at the bird feeder and friends from near and far - friends that we know and friends that we will meet for the first time - will be walking up the ramp, onto the deck, and through our door.
All of us are looking forward to seeing you in the shop - but until then, best wishes from this extraordinary island that we call home - Madeline.

    Island Winter

    Staying Warm and Keeping Busy

It's been a busy - and very active! - winter so far on Madeline Island, and everyone is finding ways to cross the snow and ice.

The ice road is still open, with island residents slowly driving their cars back and forth across the great ice expanse between the Island and Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Another very playful means of transportation: the annual Sled Dog Races! Jonas P. Heinzerling created this wonderful video of the event:

Last weekend, Wisconsin Public Television's program "Wisconsin From The Air" sent a helicopter film crew to follow a group of bicyclists crossing the ice road to Madeline Island. Other locals joined on foot, snowshoes, and skis.

However you are getting around this winter, stay safe & warm!
